Wed, 28 Oct, 10am - 2pm AWST

Skills to deliver equitable, inclusive, person-centred healthcare

People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds can face barriers when accessing and navigating healthcare. Communication difficulties, unfamiliar systems, bias and services that do not respond to different needs can affect access, safety and the experience of care.

Every person involved in a health service can help make care more accessible, respectful and responsive.

This free, in-person workshop will help healthcare staff recognise barriers, reflect on their own assumptions and apply culturally responsive approaches in their everyday work.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is primarily for people working in healthcare, including:

  • Nurses and nurse coordinators

  • Allied health professionals

  • Administrative staff

  • Reception and customer service staff

  • Patient support staff

  • Service coordinators and managers

  • Other people who interact with health consumers

Consumer representatives with an interest in culturally responsive healthcare are also welcome to register.

As this workshop is funded to support the health workforce, priority will be given to health staff if demand exceeds available places.

No previous cultural diversity training is required.

What will you learn?

By the end of this workshop, you will be better able to:

  • Recognise barriers that culturally and linguistically diverse consumers may experience when accessing healthcare

  • Reflect on how culture, assumptions and unconscious bias can affect interactions and decisions

  • Use practical cross-cultural communication skills

  • Respond respectfully to different cultural practices, preferences and needs

  • Identify ways to make health services more accessible and inclusive

  • Apply strategies that support equitable, culturally responsive and person-centred care

You will be presented with a certificate of completion after the workshop.
