Professional Development training for Interpreters

Supporting interpreters - working with victim survivors of sexual violence from multicultural communities

Monash Intercultural Studies, based in the School of Languages, Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics in the Faculty of Arts at Monash University, has partnered with the Victorian Government and Sexual Assault Services Victoria to develop a specialised professional development training program for interpreters working in sexual violence contexts. 

What will I learn in this program?

Designed and taught by leading academics in Translation & Interpreting Studies and the Monash Gender and Family Violence Prevention Hub, the course equips participants with foundational knowledge and practical resources to support interpreting in sexual violence service settings. Training includes video presentations, situated learning tasks, ethical scenarios, glossary-building activities, reflections, discussion forums and quizzes to support learning. It explores key areas including:

• Understanding sexual violence and its contexts, including terminology 

• Barriers to disclosure and reporting, including myths and community attitudes around sexual violence

• Building interpreting skills (including ethics) for complex and sensitive environments

• Interpreter wellbeing and self-care in sexual violence contexts

What’s included?

• Participation in full PD program, as well as access to all training materials and resources

• 4 modules offered fully  online (participants can access the course for 2 months and complete the training in self-paced mode)

• A special 3hr interactive presentation by industry experts on ‘Interpreter ethics and self-care in sexual violence contexts’ offered online, with opportunity for questions/discussions (Date and further information TBC)

How do I register?

Monash University is pleased to offer a limited number of fully-sponsored places (worth $250) for Victorian-based NAATI-certified interpreters only.

Do I receive any NAATI PD points for completion of this program?

You receive 20 PD Points (Skills Development category B.2) for completing the program, plus an extra 15 PD Points (Ethics category A.1 ) for attendance at the interactive presentation.

Do I receive any Monash credentials for completing this program?

Upon successful completion of the full program, you will be awarded a Monash University digital badge to share with your network. Digital credentials offer verified evidence of your skills, capabilities, and expertise in this area.
