Event description

This is an Advocacy Sector Conversations forum series session.

This event has reached capacity and a waitlist is now in place. It will be recorded and made available through the DARU website after the event so you won't miss out if places don't become available.

About this session

A team of researchers at the University of Melbourne has been working with essential and basic service providers, people with cognitive disability, and their representative organisations to develop tools to promote the consumer rights of people with cognitive disability.

Yvette Maker,  Senior Research Associate from the Melbourne Social Equity Institute at University of Melbourne, presents the resources that came out of the research. These include guidance for retailers to make their processes and communications more helpful and accessible when contracting for services and solving problems during the life of a contract for essential and basic services such as  phone and internet, electricity, gas and water, banking and insurance services. The guidance incorporates human rights considerations including accessible communication and information, support for decision-making, and anti-discrimination.

Auslan interpreters and captioning are provided at this event.
