Supporting your child through primary school:

General Family Workshop

This workshop is specifically designed for parents who have a child currently attending primary school or starting primary school during 2020, or in 2021. This session will be presented by an Autism Consultant with prior experience in teaching and supporting students on the spectrum in a range of classroom settings.

The following topics will be covered:

What schooling options are available;
What to expect;
Who to talk to at school;
What support your child might be eligible to access at school;
What to consider when looking at schools;
Teaching school readiness skills;
Preparing your child for the transition into Primary School or changing schools;
Creating and implementing systems to support academic expectations – such as learning new routines, use of organisational folders, assignment break down, and recording homework;
Bullying prevention and strategies;
Supporting transitions and separation anxiety; and
What to do if things are not going well

Workshop Definitions:

General Workshops are designed to give participants a better understanding of autism. They present a broad range of effective strategies that participants can use to improve their practice when working with individuals on the spectrum. These workshops are suited to participants who have not attended previous Autism SA workshops.

In Focus Workshops are designed for participants who have a good general knowledge and understanding of autism. These sessions are for those wanting to enhance their professional practice by developing skills to support individuals in specific areas relating to autism. It is recommended that participants first attend a General Workshop prior to attending an In Focus Workshop.

Autism SA has a highly experienced and diverse training team which includes consultants, occupational therapists, speech pathologists and facilitators who have extensive experience in working with individuals on the autism spectrum in a range of settings.
