Truancy or in more general terms, school non-attendance and disengagement is a local, state, national and international concern. Despite millions of dollars in investment and the best efforts of educational and inter-agency professionals coupled with the findings of thousands of researcher projects and publications the problem continues and, as is the case of Western Australia, is getting worse. The problem is exacerbated by the sheer volume of research and reports some of which have contradictory findings.

Addressing the school non-attendances and disengagement issues is important as there is relationship between class attendance and academic engagement and a significant relationship between academic perseverance and academic engagement. In the majority of cases those students who demonstrate disengagement from school are likely not to complete school and are at greater risk of unemployment, low income, social exclusion, risky health behaviours, and are more likely to engage with the criminal justice system. Of concern is a recent report compiled by the Western Australian Commissioner for Young People and Children that suggests 25% of high school students are disengaged from school.

Professor Brook will summarise current research and outline strategies and techniques that have proven successful in engaging students in meaningful education. He will present local successful projects and discuss a way forward that promotes student engagement from Kindergarten through to the end of high school and will refer to the current Department of Education Western Australia ten point plan to improving student attendance.
