Surfacing Ceramics

Surfacing Ceramics is an intimate, hands-on workshop introducing slab construction and surface exploration. Guided by Lorraine and Victoria, participants will create two simple forms—a bowl and a cylinder—while experimenting with four different surfacing techniques. These include slip work, sodium silicate, and the use of additions and inclusions to enhance texture and form. Designed for beginners, the workshop builds confidence in hand-building while encouraging creative decision-making. In a relaxed and supportive environment, participants will develop skills and create personalised ceramic pieces that will be glaze fired and returned after the session.

About the Artist
Lorraine and Victoria are ceramic artists united by a shared interest in expressive, sculptural forms and material exploration. Their practices are informed by diverse creative backgrounds spanning ceramics, costume, needlework, and wood design, often incorporating multi-media approaches. Both hold Diplomas in Ceramics and maintain independent studio practices. Lorraine’s work has received multiple awards, recognising her ongoing investigation into form, surface, and process.

Materials and Equipment
All materials are provided, including clay, tools, surface additions, and finishing processes such as firing and glazing. Aprons are available for use, and a grazing table lunch is included.

Additional Information
Suitable for beginners. Participants are encouraged to bring creativity and enthusiasm. Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for working with clay, closed-toe shoes, and bring a water bottle. Finished works will be glaze fired and posted after the workshop; additional fees apply for postage and handling.
