Surfacing Series 6: Delphine Dora (FR), Luke M de Zilva (with Jacques Emery & Mara Schwerdtfeger) and Alexandra Spence
Description
After a few years of Surfacing being radio-mode only, I’m very pleased to present the first international artist for November's live concert.
Delphine Dora (FR) has been one of my favourite musicians for many years. For nearly two decades, she has cultivated a distinctive and intuitive musical language that bridges improvisation, folk, contemporary classical, experimental and electroacoustic music. Her album Le grand passage is something I frequently recommend as a reference point for what I've wanted the radio show to represent, and Live Beauregard is a lovely example of her vastness in the live setting. Also very exciting to have Delphine perform in Sydney for the first time after a number of collaborations with Alexandra Spence.
Alexandra Spence is a truly special artist here in Sydney. Her music and performances are intricate and subtly surprising, a beautiful creation of acoustic instruments, objects and electronics, fascinating to watch and hear evolve. I hold her in rarefied air as a solo artist equally with her other frequent collaborator Moss Hopkins (and their duo, Banana). Alexandra's album from last year, Your Whistle Tells Of Landscape, was an absolute standout for me, and my favourite of hers yet.
I’ll be performing too, for the first time with two of my favourite musicians – Jacques Emery (double bass) whose playing never ceases to amaze me, and Mara Schwerdtfeger (viola) who single-handedly turned me into a viola-over-violin fan. We’ll perform two long-form songs, partly improvised, partly prepared. It’ll be a bit like my Bright, Bright Blue live recording from Volume festival at the Art Gallery of NSW (turned split release with Bluetung), but all acoustic and more avant-folk-minimalist.
Please note, capacity is extremely limited and we expect sales to close soon.
