Event description
Join us for a keynote event during RMIT Sustainability Week featuring Esther Charlesworth, founder of Architects without Frontiers (AWF) and a global leader in humanitarian architecture. In line with this year’s theme, "Purpose in Action: People, Planet, Passion,"
Esther will share insights from her work delivering sustainable design solutions for vulnerable communities. A former professor in RMIT’s School of Architecture and Design, Esther founded both the Master of Disaster, Design and Development (MoDDD) program and the Humanitarian Architecture Research Bureau (HARB). Since 2002, AWF has delivered over 42 health, education, and social infrastructure projects across 12 countries.
Her international career spans work in Melbourne, Sydney, New York, Boston, and Beirut, and she has published eight influential books on architecture and social justice. In 2024, Esther was awarded a prestigious Fulbright Senior Scholar award to continue her research at Morgan State University in Baltimore.
