Presenting the May edition of TED-Style Talks & Discussions ✨ This month we look at sustainable use of AI in a workshop style, along with an open discussion. As always, we use a pay-what-you-feel ticket — you may choose any amount from the options listed on the final RSVP step.

Practical, safe, and sustainable ways of using AI, especially in the public sector
Summary
We'll talk about how the trend of using extremely large language models hosted on the cloud might not be the best choice for many uses. Alternatively, a relatively smaller model might be safer, more economical, and environmentally sustainable, in the long run. This also empowers and upskills the existing workforce more compared to switching to hosted LLMs, making it more practical and useful. We'll look at the pros and cons of both approaches, followed by a practical demo of running a locally trained LLM on a consumer-grade device. are using, or considering, using AI at work
have a basic (high-level) idea of how LLMs work
are concerned about data privacy and sovereignity when using AI tools
are curious about making and running their own LLMs in their departments/organisations

Dr. Moiz Penkar (BSc Hons, MBA, PhD) finds himself advocating for mindful and thoughtful use of technology. His research publications have covered topics like distributed storage and eye gaze interaction. More recently he has worked with Vista Entertainment, Creative HQ, and Arlo Training Software.

- What is this group about?
We meet monthly to share our passions and expertise with each other. At a typical event, 3 volunteer speakers from the group talk about something they care about, followed by questions. Each talk is 10 mins long, followed by 10 mins of Q&A
- What are the topics/subjects of the talks?
Anything and everything that a speaker might care about, including work or life experiences, research or academic interests, or even hobbies. Even controversial topics are encouraged. We don't allow talks that involve preaching or sales pitches.
- Who can join the group?
We are just curious people from all walks of life who are open to learning and getting inspired from each other. Everyone is welcome to join, as long as you are curious. Learning from each other hopefully also broadens our thinking and improves our appreciation of the "other side".
- Do I have to pay to attend?
You don't have to pay to attend, if you don't want to. We operate on a pay-what-you-feel basis. It's totally fine not to pay. We look at the amount as an indication of the value you associate with attending these events. This helps cover costs while also keeping our doors open to attend/trial the events for free.
- What if I want to speak at a future event?
If you're interested in speaking, just email us (support@tedstyletalks.freshdesk.com) with a summary of your topic. Note that all topics are encouraged, but sales pitches, preaching, and anything discriminatory or defamatory is not welcome. If in doubt, just ask. You can talk about anything you care about; work, life experience, passion project, your big idea, etc. You don’t need to be an expert speaker. On the contrary, you are encouraged to use this group to better your public speaking skills.
