Mugga-Mugga Education Centre
symonston, australia
ACT Historic Places
Event description
Join Josephine Cosgrove and learn how to eco dye on reclaimed fabric with local plants, food waste and homemade iron mordant. By bundle dyeing fabric with leaves and food scraps, you will create striking leaf prints to transform your old cotton textiles.
Natural dyeing is a great way to connect with nature and explore our local environment.
Throughout the workshop you will:
- Gain knowledge about our local plant species.
- Learn about the differences between protein and cellulose fibres.
- Experiment with different mordants (substances used to set dyes to fabric).
- Be able to create leaf prints and dye baths sustainably from your own backyard.
What to bring:
- Apron or old clothes
- Fabric - material will be provided to you for the workshop, however if you wish to dye any additional items, please feel free to bring along something small to dye. Make sure it is made from natural material (cotton, linen, hemp, wool or silk)
- Journal or writing paper
