Event description

Sustainable Business Yarra presents circularity and energy efficiency in the building industry.

Come and join us at Provans timber and hardware for a supplier expo, meet the suppliers, hear what makes them sustainable and how they can help make your build more sustainable. With all new builds needing to be 7 stars or better from the start of May, now is a great time to invest in better understanding the products to help make a build more sustainable.

In addition to the expo, we will have Jeremy Spencer from Sustainable Builders Alliance and Mark van Haandel of MVH Constructions to talk about their experience and how they approach sustainability in building.

There will be morning tea and coffee provided, so come along and learn about many of the new sustainable supply options for your next build.

About the speakers

Jeremy Spencer
 (Sustainable Builders Alliance)

For almost 20 years Jeremy has been a Registered Builder, Energy Assessor and Director at design & build company Positive Footprints. Positive Footprints have won multiple awards for sustainability and worked to show that energy efficient sustainable design and high-performance net zero home construction is a cost-effective option and can be a mainstream reality. An educator, National Sustainability Awards head judge, past Design Matters National director and creator of the True Zero Carbon Challenge, Jeremy is passionate about spreading knowledge on how to build better. Jeremy is a proud founding director of Sustainable Builders Alliance and lead writer for the SBA website and its Roadmap to Net Zero Homes - a free practical guide to the industry on how to design and build to achieve cost effective Net Zero outcomes.

Mark van Haandel (MVH Constructions)

With a carpentry trade behind him, along with Passivhaus Tradesman Certification, Mark’s has over 25 year’s experience in the construction industry delivering high end architectural and award winning homes, and over 5 years as a certified Passivhaus tradesman. His experience in building Passivhaus over the last few years mixed with his drive to make all new homes highly efficient and sustainably built, has lead Mark to question not only the sustainability and efficiency of how these homes will perform post construction, but also the sustainability and efficiency of the materials chosen for the projects along with the waste which is generated.

Mark champions recycling at the forefront of his business and sorts all site waste with an aim to recycle 80% of construction waste generated and has a designated sorting area of all construction waste at each one of their projects. Mark is currently investigating solutions to repurpose items salvaged during demolition on our sites, significantly reducing materials sent to landfill and using the notion that houses are no longer scheduled for demolition at the end of their lifecycle , they are in fact scheduled for deconstruction. This process significantly reduces waste, circulates old product with new life back into new buildings and reduces environmental impact. Mark is keen to educate and share his findings and encourage others that we need to change how we have thought of waste before, be more resourceful and respectful of new and old materials.

Provans have arranged for the following suppliers to present on the day, if you would like to present on the day we can put you in touch with Provan's just e-mail aaron.gray@yarracity.vic.gov.au.
