    Sustainable Design — Designing Out Waste

    Date: Thursday 12 September 2024

    Sustainable design plays a crucial role in eliminating construction waste at the front end of the construction process. Efficient planning, material selection and designing for deconstruction are some examples of how we can achieve this.

    Priority One in partnership with RDT PacificContext and Design Group Stapleton Elliott are delivering an informative afternoon focused on demystifying the design process and where you can make changes that will have a massive impact on reducing or completely eliminating waste from the construction process.

    Leighton Watene, Context 
    Leighton is a Project Lead with Context Architects with 30 years' experience in the building sector. His role at Context is to oversee the planning, design and execution of projects, and build strong, cohesive teams both within Context and with its consultants to foster an environment where successes are celebrated.  

    Presentation topics 

    • Consultants who provide services focusing on sustainability and how these are applied to project feasibility, selection and assist finance. 
    • Examples of sustainability excellence. Projects within the Tauranga area that are either built or currently under construction, and how the architect approached sustainability, including TCC Building, Northern Quarter, Robotics Plus, Hamilton Street Development.

    Hannah Andrew, DGSE 
    Designgroup Stapleton Elliott (DGSE) is a nationwide, award-winning practice, formed by a team of 135 staff with diverse backgrounds and skills. It offers a refined scope of design services, including architecture, interior architecture, master planning, and landscape architecture, across all typologies. Hannah is a Registered Architect and DGSE’s Tauranga Studio Principal, contributing to marketing, strategic direction and relationship development, as well as working as Project Lead for various projects nationwide. Hannah has long woven the principles of sustainability into her work, and she is also a champion of DGSE’s sustainability chapter and carbon neutral efforts.  

    Alex Cutler, RDT Pacific Alex’s role at RDT Pacific spans Chief Executive and Chief Sustainability Officer. An experienced senior executive, industry influencer and lifelong sustainability advocate, with strong expertise in the property and construction industries, Alex assists trusted clients in identifying the opportunity that sustainability provides the built environment. Previously Chief Executive of the New Zealand Green Building Council, Alex is practiced at representing the voice of sustainability in industry, is experienced at balancing the needs of a wide range of stakeholders and has worked with a number of clients to help them clarify strategic sustainability opportunities. Alex’s career has included consulting for Sustainability Ltd, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Urban Construct Ltd, focused on selected projects where sustainability influenced a step change in organisational development. 

    Presentation topics  
    Hannah will discuss aspects of the design process and key considerations for all parties involved. This will include: 

    • Design set-up – starting the conversation. 
    • Opening the dialogue about change / doing better. 
    • Encouraging whole lifecycle thinking. 
    • Increasing baseline knowledge and achieving smarter design solutions. 
    • What training does the industry / clients need? 
    • Tauranga Moana Design Principles, i.e. Kaitiakitanga. 
    • Typical challenges and how to overcome them.
