In this session we will to hear from Tenants Victoria, Monash academic Michaela Lang, and Better Renting to discuss how you can get your rental provider onboard with updating the efficiency and comfort of your home. Come with us as we navigate the realities of being a renter in Australia today, what barriers renters encounter when attempting to improve the efficiency of their home, and the tips & tricks of communicating with your rental provider to get the best results.

Speakers:

Michaela Lang

Michaela is a behavioural researcher with a particular focuses on improving the health and environmental impacts of poor-quality housing. She recently completed a PhD examining the energy efficiency behaviour of small-scale private landlords. Prior to that, Michaela worked in local government for many years, leading community engagement on climate change mitigation and adaptation initiatives.

Bernie Barrett

Bernie is Better Renting's Advocacy Coordinator. She has a background in consumer and lived experience advocacy and leadership. She most recently worked with peak bodies across health, mental health lived experience, and LGBTQIA+ advocacy in South Australia. Bernie has a strong focus on social justice and brings her passion for community-driven change and systemic advocacy together into her work at Better Renting. She is a 2022 Australian Progress Fellow.

Amy Frew

Amy Frew (she/her) joined Tenants Victoria as Managing Lawyer in August 2022. Previously Amy was Deputy Managing Lawyer of the civil law team in Alice Springs at the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency. Prior to her four years in the Northern Territory, Amy was a lawyer at the Human Rights Legal Centre. Amy has also previously worked in policy roles in the Victorian Government.
