Event description

Slash, cut, stick, scribble, puncture, stretch: attend a ‘scratch film’ workshop run by local artist and sculptor Lucy Kostos. Learn how to manipulate 16mm film stock in a colourful and inventive workshop – drop in, or stay from start to finish. Learn the principles behind analogue cinema, use stationary to cut and paste, and learn about the vintage equipment used to animate celluloid. From the grizzly intro to American Horror Story, to the musical world of Len Lye; scrach film is the animating style du jour. Join Lucy, renowned specialist in sculptural cinema, for a deep dive into the bonkers world of 16mm.

Lucy Kostos is a glass artist formerly involved in AFW – Artist Film Workshop – who teaches, screens, and celebrates the art of analogue cinema. Having shown at Carriageworks (Eora), ACCA, Ithaca House, and curated showcases at NFSA, Lucy will be hosting workshops at Testing Grounds Emporium in an intimate setting for artists, free of charge. Children aged between 8-12 are invited to play with analogue techniques using sharpies, hole punchers, paint, to animate a short film that will then be screened at end of session.
