Event description

safeTALK is a free, in-person half-day suicide alertness workshop that prepares participants to become suicide-alert helpers. It can be attended by anyone over the age of 15, regardless of their studies, qualifications or experience. safeTALK is for everyone. In this small group training of approximately 15-30 people, participants will learn how to recognise potential thoughts of suicide in others, and become better equipped with the tools to connect an individual in need of support, to further help.

Presented by the batyr team, this training will be delivered by young people, for young people. Swinburne University is providing this training for students.

Participants will:ย

  • Have free access to this face-to-face training

  • Receive a certificate of completion

  • Have access to a community resource person in the room to support their safety and comfort

  • Engage in facilitated discussions and skills practice

  • Hear a powerful and hopeful story of lived experience

Participants will learn to:

  • Identify someone who may be having thoughts of suicide

  • Initiate a safe conversation and ask directly if thoughts of suicide are present

  • Refer individuals to further support and/or crisis services within the community

Participants must be able to attend the entire 4 hour workshop in order to complete the training.

Disclaimer:ย Whilst there are no adverse effects from training, we recommend that those who have been bereaved by suicide in the past six months, take special consideration for whether they feel prepared to attend. Please only attend this training if you feel comfortable and prepared to do so, as topics of mental health crises and suicide will be directly addressed.ย
