Sydney Alliance | Renters' Assembly 2026
Description
Join renters, supportive landlords, community organisations and local leaders from across Sydney for a community assembly on making rental homes healthier, safer and more affordable.
This is an opportunity to connect with others, share experiences and build a collective case for change. Because no one should have to face the challenges of renting alone. Together, we’ll explore how improving existing rental homes can make them safer, more comfortable and affordable to run in the mist of our changing weather, what support landlords need, and how renters can benefit.
With the NSW Government considering changes to rental housing standards, we’ll bring community voices and solutions into a constructive conversation, calling for better-quality and affordable homes. We expect senior government representatives, crossbenchers and members from the opposition will join us to hear directly from affected communities and supportive landlords.
Whether you rent, own a rental property or believe everyone deserves a decent home, your voice matters. Come along to connect, learn and be part of a community working towards healthier homes and fairer rents across NSW.
FAQs
- Is this open to all?
This is open to members of Sydney Alliance partner organisations and their supporters. Dinner will be served on the night, with an option to register without dinner.
We need the presence of renters, homeowners, parents, workers, young people, older people, faith communities, service providers, and anyone seeing the pressure of poor housing, high bills and cost of living in the lives of their people. One need not necessarily be in an organisation for housing, or a policy person, to come.
Please share this with people in your organisation and networks, and encourage your organisational peers to come with you. If you need any support doing this or have any questions, please feel free to contact Acting Lead Diana at dolmos@sydneyalliance.org.au or Organiser Raul at rsugu@sydneyalliance.org.au.
- Why could this be a critical moment for renters in NSW?
The NSW Government has finished an investigation on whether to implement Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards for rental homes following the experience of ACT and Victoria and is now considering its next steps. As we expect a very hot Summer and moving closer to the state election, this is an important moment to show that rental housing quality and energy costs matter across our communities.
- What will happen on the night?
At the Assembly, we will hear stories and we will learn about the benefits that this policy solution could provide to renters: homes that are safe, healthy and affordable to live in.
This is also an opportunity to hear about what those seeking your vote next year will have to say.
Invitations have gone to several representatives following up our successful engagement at the Launch Day in Parliament House. We are still waiting on confirmations and will share updates closer to the date.
