Sydney Cantata Project - Membra Jesu Nostri

Membra Jesu Nostri

We’re delighted to invite you to our next performance, presenting one of the greatest and most significant works in Western music: Dieterich Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu Nostri.

Structured as a cycle of seven cantatas, Membra Jesu Nostri meditates on the suffering Christ through a series of vivid reflections on different parts of His body—feet, knees, hands, side, breast, heart, and face—creating a spiritual journey that is both poetic and deeply human.

Buxtehude’s extraordinary gift for expressive harmony and melodic intensity anticipates the later passions of J.S. Bach, and this remarkable cycle stands as a major milestone in the development of the German sacred cantata.

Join Artistic Director Jack Stephens and the Sydney Cantata Project for an afternoon of inspiring music that inspired Bach to compose his cantatas.
