Sydney Cantata Project - Wachet auf!
Description
Wachet Auf!
The Sydney Cantata Project returns to the beautiful St Stephen's Anglican Church, Newtown, for an afternoon of Bach on period instruments.
📅 Saturday 18 July
🕒 3:00 PM
📍 St Stephen's Anglican Church, Newtown
The programme pairs two of Bach's most joyful sacred cantatas: Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme BWV 140 — built around the watchman's cry heralding the arrival of the heavenly Bridegroom — and Herr Gott, dich loben wir BWV 16, Bach's exuberant New Year cantata brimming with thanksgiving. Together they show a composer at the height of his powers: vivid choral writing, brilliant instrumental solos, and music that manages to be both deeply devotional and irresistibly alive. Performed by leading Australian early music musicians.
