Event description

Sydney Speculative Scribes Open Mic - in partnership with WestWords
We invite you to join us for a series of Sunday afternoon open mic sessions at WestWords Western Sydney Centre for Writing. Members of Sydney Speculative Scribes, WestWords Speculative Writing are invited -- as well as members of the general public who are interested in writing and reading speculative fiction!

Our third open mic event of the year is September 14th, 2pm-4pm.

WestWords has partnered with Sydney Speculative Scribes to take your word from the page to the stage. Come read a short story or an excerpt from your longer work and listen to other speculative fiction writers in an intimate and supportive environment of writers in the same genre.

If you'd like to sign up to perform ahead of time, please email ally@westwords.com.au with the following information:

  • Your "pen name" or performance name

  • If you'd like to request a 5 minute, or a 10 minute, time slot.

  • Please let us know if you'd like to perform sitting or standing.

Adhering to the 10-minute time cap is compulsory and a sign of respect to your fellow writers and performers. The event host reserves the right to end a reading at the 10-minute mark. Please make sure you time yourself reading ahead of the event, to ensure your reading does not go over 10 minutes.

If there is room on the runsheet on the day of the event, sign ups are welcome at the door. If you miss out on a spot in May, you'll have priority to perform at the next performance on November 16th.

Future dates:
Nov 16th

Featured performer:

Brent McGregor is the author of BLOOD TIDE, and STRANGE MURMURINGS, and winner of the 2024 Asylumfest Mayday Hills Ghost Story Competition. His short fiction has appeared in Midnight Echo, the publication of the Australasian Horror Writers Association. He hails from Sydney, where he lives with his wife, daughter, and dogs. He grew up on Sydney's North Shore, on the edge of the Ku-ring-Gai National Park—a creative kid, with a vivid imagination, a penchant for comics, and playing Robin Hood, or Tarzan, among the eucalypts. He used to work as a climb leader on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Now, he enjoys spinning tales of terror and make-believe. His short stories involve the supernatural, cursed garden gnomes, midnight hauntings, and cryptids, among other things. He is a self-proclaimed book nerd, and when he’s not working, or playing Dad, he can be found tapping away at a haunted typewriter and talking to imaginary people, while laughing maniacally.

Follow his work at brentmcgregor.com or on social media.

Your reading should be:

  • Speculative fiction (that's sci-fi, fantasy, horror, alt-history...)

  • Either a whole piece (microfiction) or a sensible chunk of a longer work (e.g. a chapter of a novel or a segment that leaves us wanting more from a longer short story)

  • Rehearsed and ready for sharing.
