Are you interested in working across disciplines to address complex real-world challenges? This interactive event is designed for students and staff from all research backgrounds who want to develop practical skills in multidisciplinary collaboration. Using domestic violence as a case study of a real-world problem, participants will explore how researchers from different fields can work together to tackle pressing societal issues and create meaningful impact.

Through presentations, panel discussions and interactive activities, you will gain insights into both the opportunities and challenges of multidisciplinary research, while building skills that can be applied to a wide range of research. The event will conclude with small-group discussions and a catered networking lunch, providing opportunities to connect with peers, expand your research networks and explore future interdisciplinary collaborations.

The program comprises two interactive sessions of approximately one hour each:

Part 1: The “What”
A keynote presentation by Professor Susan Heward-Belle will be followed by a panel discussion featuring researchers and HDR students working in this field, including

  • Cory Wolven (MPhil, Psychology)

  • Bridget Mac Eochagain (PhD, Theatre and Performance Studies)

  • Mary Stewart (PhD, Law)

  • Caterina Gattinara (PhD, Legal Psychology)

Together, they will explore how different disciplines contribute unique perspectives to domestic violence research and demonstrate the value of multidisciplinary approaches to addressing complex social issues.

Part 2: The “How”
This session focuses on the practical skills and strategies needed to build and sustain successful multidisciplinary collaborations. Using the SYNC-DFSV: Sydney Network for Collaboration on Domestic, Family, and Sexual Violence as a case study, participants will examine its origins, challenges and impact. Associate Professor Helen Paterson, Associate Professor Ghena Krayem and Associate Professor Anna Boucher will share insights into how effective cross-disciplinary partnerships are developed, maintained and translated into real-world outcomes.
