Take What You Need
What actually makes you who you are today?
Take What You Need is a durational performance and evolving art installation by multidisciplinary artist Jacinta Way, exploring the tiny moments that shape who we become through one of the most intimate modes of expression: letters.
For two days during the festival, Jacinta will sit in the space writing letters. Each is addressed to something that has influenced her life: a person, place, object, memory, moment or idea. Some funny. Some uncomfortable. Some deeply personal.
Enter the space, sit, read, reflect, or simply observe. The letters are available for all to read, inviting you into the privacy of each moment. The more you read, the more you start to form a portrait of a person you've never met.
Then you are invited to become part of it. At a writing desk in the space, pen a letter of your own. In exchange, choose another to take with you, a small piece of someone else's story to carry. You may never know who wrote it, or why.
As more letters are written and exchanged, the installation continually changes. Every contribution adds another piece, while every letter taken leaves an absence behind. What starts as a portrait of one person becomes a collective character, shaped by everyone who has left something behind.
At its core, Take What You Need asks how much of ourselves is made up of other people.
Come in. Read something. Write something. Leave something behind. And take what you need.
