Taking Flight: A dinner in support of refugees
Description
Taking Flight: A dinner in support of refugees
Join us on Tuesday, 28 April 2026, at Kyiv Social for Taking Flight, an evening of good food, great company, and celebration.
You’ll enjoy a delicious three-course Ukrainian meal and welcome drink and hear directly from former RACS clients who have built new lives in safety here in Australia.
We chose to call this evening Taking Flight because that’s our hope for the refugees we work with: a chance to thrive in safety and freedom, far from the persecution and uncertainty they fled.
Speakers
We will hear inspiring speeches from our speakers, Magdalene and Mohsen.
Magdalene, a sports journalist, came to Australia seeking asylum in 2018 after facing danger and death threats because of her activism against female genital mutilation back in her home country of Sierra Leone. In Australia, Magdalene has continued to use her journalism skills and passion to advocate for the rights of her community. She is currently the SGBV Specialist Caseworker at the Jesuit Refugee Services Finding Safety Project (Women Space) in Parramatta.
Mohsen, arrived on Christmas Island in 2013, where he spent 19 months in detention. Despite facing significant challenges, he remained determined and resilient, working through adversity and continuing to move forward. In 2018, he began his university studies and successfully graduated in 2021. Following this achievement, he started a career in banking. Today, Mohsen runs his own property business and provides coaching to small businesses, leading a team of 12 employees.
