The Illawarra Lowlands Grassy Woodland is a Critically Endangered Ecological Community and one of the rapidly declining peri-urban woodlands in the Illawarra-Shoalhaven region.

In the Illawarra, remnants of this unique woodland can be found at Croome Reserve, Blackbutt Nature Reserve, Wiseman Park, and Stream Hill, as well as in small pockets on private land along the edge of the escarpment.

Join the team from the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) for an engaging exploration of Illawarra Lowlands Grassy Woodland. Discover what we can all do to help preserve this vital ecological community. The team will introduce their new project, Guardians of the Grassy Woodlands, which aims to increase community awareness and foster intergenerational guardianship of this special ecosystem.

We invite all Landcare members, Bushcare volunteers, local landholders, and community members to join this important discussion.

Lucy Loft
Community Engagement Officer, Ecosystem and Threatened Species Team, South East Region, DCCEEW
Lucy’s work revolves around community engagement, building partnerships, and fostering citizen science initiatives. She consults with traditional knowledge holders and communicates scientific insights to the public, enhancing their understanding of and involvement in caring for threatened species and ecosystems on Dharawal and Yuin Country.

Dr Beth Mott
Senior Threatened Species Officer, Saving Our Species, South East Region, DCCEEW
Beth is a conservation biologist with extensive experience as a researcher, university lecturer, and National Parks and Wildlife officer. Her work has focused on topics such as frog decline, quoll baiting, feral cat impacts, large forest owls, communication in lizards and fish, and improving hardwood plantations for fauna. Beth also spent five years with BirdLife Australia, transforming our understanding of how to manage urban environments for owls.
