Film Screening: TALLAGANDA - Endangered Greater Gliders on the NSW South Coast

Just a few hours drive from Canberra, in the towering wet eucalypt forests of Tallaganda, lives one of Australia's most elusive and endangered native species, the Greater Glider. Once commonly found in these native forests, the Southern Greater Glider, Australia's largest gliding mammal, now faces the threat of extinction due to habitat loss from industrial scale logging.

Join the Conservation Council ACT Region, the Canberra Forest Alliance and ACF Community Canberra this National Threatened Species Day, Monday 7 September, for an exciting screening of the short film TALLAGANDA by award-winning South Coast filmmaker David Gallan. The film will be followed by a Q&A panel featuring:

• David Gallan, film-maker

• Dr Ana Gracanin, glider conservation researcher

• Joslyn van der Moolen, convenor of the National Parks Association of NSW Eurobodalla Branch

Featuring the ANU Fenner School's very own researchers, expert forest ecologist Professor David Lindenmayer and glider conservation researcher Dr Ana Gracanin, the film highlights the conservation issues facing the greater glider, the researchers who work to understand them and the activists seeking to protect their habitat in Tallaganda, Badja and Glenbog State Forests, which are still under threat from logging. The film uses innovative techniques to record the natural behaviour of a range of gliders and other nocturnal species, including groundbreaking recordings from inside a greater glider den tree.

Support the Great Southern Forest proposal

The Great Southern Forest proposal is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect forests, wildlife, rivers, and cultural areas that are deeply significant to Aboriginal communities in southern NSW.

Led by the NSW National Parks Association, the Great Southern Forest proposal stretches across a 100 kilometre wide corridor from the Illawarra region to the Victorian border. It is made up of 55 State Forests, 24 Flora Reserves and 98 National Parks and Wildlife Service managed reserves. No private land is included in the proposal.

The proposal would help the region cope with growing pressure from climate change, development, severe bushfires and the ongoing loss of plants and animals, helping nature recover and remain resilient into the future.

To make this happen, native forest logging would end in nearby State Forests. These forests would be added to existing national parks to create one large, connected reserve of almost 1.2 million hectares.

About the filmmaker

David Gallan's previous films include Understorey (2016), a key documentary on the campaigns last century for the south east forests, The Ambassador (2020), an award winning short starring the late Wynn Roberts and Koru Lian Timor (2024), a film about a Timorese choir touring Australia.

David’s wildlife photography has also been part of the global Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the Nature Photographer of the Year exhibitions. His work is widely used by conservation organisations to raise awareness of environmental issues.
