About Te Poipoi Kaiako | Mentor support programme 

Mō Te Poipoi Kaiako | Hōtaka tautāwhi Pou Tautoko

Te Poipoi Kaiako guides mentors and mentees on their journey toward full certification and ongoing professional learning and development (PLD). It is fully funded by the Ministry of Education for kura, schools and early learning services. 

Who are these workshops for? 

Mō wai ēnei awheawhe?

Tātai Aho Rau Core Education provides this professional development support for those with Tōmua (Provisional Practising Certification) and Tūturu (Full Practising Certification) in early years, primary, or secondary settings:

• Provisional Teachers (PTs) in English medium and Pia in Māori medium settings (Tōmua)

• Overseas Trained Teachers (OTTs) with Tōmua | provisional certification

• Mentor teachers and Pou Tautoko (Tūturu)

About the workshops 

Mō ngā awheawhe

There are 11 face to face workshops across the motu.

There is no charge to attend the workshops as they are funded by the Ministry of Education.

Refreshments, morning tea and lunch will be provided. However, travel and release costs are not funded.

Workshops run from 9am–3pm; refreshments are available from 8.45am.

The workshops are facilitated in English and te reo Māori where appropriate.

There is no need for you to have attended a workshop before: any aspect of Te Poipoi Kaiako can be accessed in any order and at any time. The workshop content will be different to previous workshops and will be adaptive and responsive to the needs of attendees.

In the morning we will:

• Begin with whakawhanaungatanga

• Explore what’s new and on top, like Te Poipoi Kaiako online learning modules and other resources; Teaching Council resources; and other useful materials or information

• Look into what it means to demonstrate commitment to tangata whenuatanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership

• Explore the new 2026 Standards for the Teaching Profession

• Review the process to move to Tūturu | Full Certification

In the afternoon we will collaborate in breakouts in response to what the group would like to focus on, for example:

• What makes an effective induction and mentoring programme

• Establishing effective professional practices

• Sharing positive classroom management strategies

• How we can support our own and each others’ wellbeing

Workshop highlights

For everyone:

• Connecting and networking with other mentor teachers, Pou Tautoko, Pia and provisional teachers

• Understanding the process to obtain Tūturu | Full Certification

• Initiating and building relationships and networks across your region

• Developing your culturally responsive practice and capabilities

For mentors and Pou Tautoko: 

• Exploring effective mentoring practices and the value of mentoring when creating a meaningful induction programme

• Supporting you to help current and future mentees to develop and embed their professional practice

• Gaining a greater practical understanding of what is required for a mentoring programme, and what is required to endorse a PT to move to full registration

For provisional teachers and Pia: 

• Developing your professional practice

• Support the development of what you need for Tūturu | Full Certification

For overseas trained teachers: 

• Developing your understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand and our education context
