Echoes from the Waterslide: writing multiple perspectives
A workshop led by the creators of Good Mourning, Director Hannah Armstrong and Writer Sonia Dodd. 

Good Mourning is a new Australian play which explores loss and grief from the perspective of an eight-year-old. Pieced together from interviews, news reports, and diary entries, Good Mourning captures the true story of Hannah’s father’s death from the varying perspectives of Hannah’s family members. 

This workshop explores how the body can be used to generate stories. Through a series of writing prompts and movement exercises, participants write a short piece of work then, using verbatim theatre techniques, explore the complexity of different characters’ perspectives. Hannah and Sonia will explore the techniques they used to create the script and offer insights into the challenges of capturing different perspectives of stories. 

At the end of the workshop, participants walk away with a new piece of writing and a range of tools they can use to explore different perspectives, and insight into how to get a story out of the body and onto paper… and vice versa!

Good Mourning will be presented on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 September, at the Civic Theatre Playhouse, as part of the 2023 Civic Theatre season and New Annual. 

This workshop is a partnership between Tantrum Youth Arts and Hunter Writers’ Centres.

SUBMIT YOUR WORK FOR INSTALLATION 

You are invited to submit an anonymous, hand-written story of loss and grief to be included in an art installation in the theatre foyer, during Good Mourning's season. Audience members are invited to explore these offerings and reflections prior to the performance. 

Contributions can be as creative as you like, we just ask that they are submitted on A4-size paper, single-sided, and hand-written. 

We encourage you to leave your stories with Tantrum after the workshop or post them to PO Box 2014, Dangar 2309. Due to the nature of the project, submissions cannot be returned.
