Tap Sundays
Description
The Tap Project
The Tap Project classes will be suited to beginners, young passionate dancers wanting to grow their skills or older students who need to blow some dust off their boots. We offer dancers a non-competitive environment focused on development and community.
Tommy J Egan will take the lead with guest mentors who are hand selected for their experience in the class room and on stage. Tommy has tap danced around the world with his own show The Tap Pack and is sought out as a soloist dancer. He has a truly diverse resume as a performer working with the likes of Tap Dogs, Fame The Musical, The Great Gatsby, Singing In The Rain, Kylie Minogue, X-Factor, and Australia’s Got Talent.
Monday
7:00pm-9:00pm Youth Company
13+ years old
The Tap Project Youth Company auditions students from all over NSW to collect the next generation of tap dancing talent. The team work on dance films, performances and their technical ability, rehearsing together as a dance company in an experiential learning style.
Tap Sunday's
9am-10am Junior Tap Class
9-12 years old
This class is a fun and focused space for young dancers to build strong foundations -an ideal starting point on the journey to becoming a tap dancing legend! We start from the ground up working on their technique and style, led by one of the Tap Project students working under the direction of Tommy.
10:00am-11am Adults Class (Beginner/Intermediate)
This is a fun class with a focus on dancing to Jazz music. This wouldn’t be suitable for someone who has never tap danced before but only a few weeks in an introductory class would be sufficient to reach the level. In the future I hope we can offer an introductory class at the start of each term.
11:00am-12pm - Intermediate
13+ years old
Perfect for young dancers (13+) looking to advance their skills and for adults eager to challenge themselves. This class emphasises musicality and technical development.
As our community grows, we aim to establish a performance team and offer opportunities for younger members to progress into the Tap Project Company.
If enrolment allows, we may split into two groups to better cater to various skill levels.

The Tap Project Tour are one of only a few organisations solely dedicated to tap dance, in Australia. We affirm tap dance as an African American art form with a rich and complex history. With this, musicality and improvisation form a core of our style. We are all about creating an environment that is non-competitive with a focus on learning and inspiring. Our hope is to grow the community of tap dancers in Australia.
Tap shoes - Which ones should I Slyde on my feet?
Capezio shoes are excellent quality, with a few great options to choose from. In general, a full-sole shoe (rather than a split sole) is best for training, and higher-quality shoes typically have thicker leather soles.
Cadence – The most cost-effective option and great for beginners.
Roxy or 960 – A great step up in quality.
K360 – The highest-quality option and currently the most popular choice among professionals. The plain black version is reasonably priced, while coloured pairs are a significant investment.
Bloch's JSam is also an excellent option.
Most tap dancers prefer a shoe with a bit of weight, as it produces clearer, stronger sounds.
Should I loosen my tap plates?
Some dancers like their plates slightly looser because they feel it creates a brighter, louder sound. A half turn on the screws is generally fine, but the plates should never rattle. Some brands come with pre-loosened plates, but I don't recommend this, as it can make your sounds less clear and precise. I personally keep my plates fully tightened.
What if my plate is broken?
If a plate has come loose, you can usually repair it by screwing it back on. If it continues to come off, the screw holes may have become enlarged. In that case, fill the hole with matchsticks and a small amount of glue, screw the screw back in and unscrew it again, then insert another matchstick before tightening the plate. This helps fill the hole and can extend the life of the shoe by another year or so.
Tap plates shouldn't fall off with normal use- they generally only do so after extensive wear.
