Tapas Plate Design—Ceramics Workshop with Danny Murphy

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Another great Dry Season creative workshop is coming to Godinymayin on Saturday 20 August from 10am to 3pm. Don't miss this ceramic glazing and design opportunity, guided by master potter Danny Murphy. Participants will begin with pre-made ceramic plates ready to paint, design, and glaze. Murphy will teach techniques to help participants design their own vibrant pattern, using pencil tracing, brush painting, sgraffito, and more. All materials and tool will be provided, and Murphy will fire the new plates after the workshop—so participants can use them at home.

Places are limited to 20, so sign up for a spot now, and start thinking about how you would glaze and pattern your own dinnerware and side serving plates. All materials and firing are included, and the workshop is $40 for 1 plate, $60 for 2 plates, and $75 for 3 plates. Click below, mark your calendar, and get creative with Danny Murphy at Godinymayin!

About Workshop Instructor Danny Murphy

Well known Katherine artist Danny Murphy is a legend about town and amongst the Australian ceramics community.  A leading Territory artists, he was born and raised in Katherine and currently lives and works on the family property. There on the banks of the Katherine river, Murphy's life and studio are dedicated to his art. He began making ceramics in 1980 following the footsteps of his mother and mentor, who he worked beside for twenty years in their rustic pottery shed.

The prolific artist has a story to tell of his family’s settlement in the area four generations ago and of his remarkable creative process: collecting and processing the clay from the banks of the Katherine river, throwing unique objects on the potter’s wheel, and formulating ceramic glazes of seaweed and minerals gathered on his yearly travels to Adelaide. Murphy’s ceramics are otherworldly and the environment he works in is visually intriguing.

He derives his ideas from a close association with nature and its rustic harmony. His Greatest influences are landscapes, sandstone outcrops, red sand, the spinifex of Northern and Central Australia, the escarpment country leading to the Katherine George and the heavily wooded river where he was raised.

His works are held in many private and corporate collections in Australia and overseas, including Sweden, England, Scotland, Japan, USA, and New Zealand. His honours include winning the Katherine Art Prize in 1990, 2006, 2007 and being selected as the official trophy maker for the Waterhouse Natural Art Prize in 2006.

In August 2021, Godinymayin Yijard Rivers Arts and Culture Centre presented a major exhibition by the artist, the wildly successful Wonderland in the Lambert Gallery. We look forward to welcoming him back to the centre for this 2022 Dry Season workshop.
