    Event description

    TARANAKI REGEN PRESENTS

A Round the Mountain Discussion Group Series

Thursday 20th June, 2024 ,10.45am - 1.30pm at Hans and Stephanie Michel's farm, Tersana Farms at Tarata.

We will start at Tarata Hall then head out to the farm.

    You're invited!

The Fourth discussion in this series.

This discussion will cover the carbon journey that Hans and Stephanie have been on over the last 3 years. The property is a 240ha hill country dry stock property. It runs 50/50 cattle/sheep, 1850 stock units working out at 9 stock units per hectare.

Hans and Stephanie have been on the farm 25 years with a focus of farming sustainably. They were the winners of 2018 Taranaki Balance Farm Environmental Award and the Taranaki Regional Council Environmental Leadership Award in 2015. The property also has QE11 National Trust protected bush blocks.

Their current focus is on succession planning for their family, growing their knowledge and capability in carbon management in soils, investing in measuring and tracking changes to the carbon stock and exploring market opportunities.

This property has two distinct areas which have historically been run separately. This is now run as a single unit, utilising high density mob grazing. They draft out the bottom 10% of animals and run these separately. This allows them to have higher covers through winter and reduce damage. They have recently imported new Wiltshire genetics to extend their gene pool. No conventional fertiliser has been used on the property for 3 years.

Hans and Stephanie have a strong focus on the farm being in balance with life. Holidays are important. Interests are important. They even have a banana plantation.

Guest speakers Ewan Campbell of Ecofarm Aotearoa and Simon Walker from Verdi.

There is a cost of $20 dollars per person to help us cover lunch and handouts. If you would like to know more please call Brooke on 0277 483 598 or email team@taranakiregen.nz

This Discussion Group Series is brought to you by Taranaki ReGen (aka Taranaki Regenerative Agriculture Charitable Trust) with support from the TOI Foundation and Quorum Sense Farmer Network.
