-No experience is necessary, all ages welcome.

-Bring any random or special pieces of timber that you'd like to work with!

-Please be prepared to work outside, and bring sunscreen, hat, and drink bottle.

    About Thomas Friend:

Thomas Friend is an emerging Tasmanian creator who typically works by carving and creating with Tasmanian timbers. Additionally, he enjoys working with watercolour and acrylic mediums. He was selected to exhibit a watercolour portrait in the Tabernacle Art Competition at MOMA Machynlleth. He has also shown works at Good Grief and Gallerie Seventy-One in Hobart. He is extremely excited to be creating new works with wood and paint and appreciates the processes and construction phases.

He has been working with local timbers since 2018, carving spoons and making sculptures. The wild places of Tasmania inspire him to create and protect while exploring different textures and forms of Tassie timber. He appreciates working with these natural phenomena for his own enjoyment and to explore our relationship with existence and identity. Recently, he won the large sculpture prize at Art Farm Birches Bay for a wooden sculpture titled takayna 71. The sculpture was inspired by his arrest among a group of activists defending the last Gondwanan temperate rainforest.
