Speakers:

Yasmin:
Salam and Kia ora, my name is Yasmin Sheikh-Ali. I was born in Saudi Arabia, and lived in Indonesia for 5 years before arriving to NZ at the age of 6. I am of Somali origin and I am also a Muslim. My talk will be about my experiences growing up in the city I call my home - Ōtautahi - and how I’ve been responded to as a woman of colour, immigrant, and a Muslim.

Big Sima:

The name Big Sima is synonymous with Christchurch Hip-Hop. Starting out as a BBoy in the early 2000’s Big Sima has since made a name for himself as an MC who cut his teeth on the battle grounds around mainly ChCh but often beyond. With over ten years’ worth of grind and dedication under his belt, in 2018 he was granted an opportunity to work with long-time friend and acclaimed producer Tiki Taane. Together they birthed their maiden project “Underground King” which has to date amassed over one million total streams across all platforms and two entries in the hot Aotearoa/NZ single chart. Last year Big Sima also achieved a milestone success with two sold out headline shows and has just recently taken the stage beside Taane and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in front of a sold-out Christchurch town hall audience. He has also stood by his values in speaking out about racism and drug addiction, common issues that continue to plague society. Currently, he is working on his debut album “Stereotypes of A Polynesian Misunderstood” which is set for release end of 2021.

Atama:

“Tēnā koutou katoa. My name is Atama, I whakapapa to Ngāti Te Ata, Waikato-Tainui. I was raised in Ōtautahi. I work in the education space supporting Māori students reach their full potential and help them navigate the transitions between secondary and tertiary education. I am involved in kapa haka, community and sit on a few different boards. My kōrero will be about certain experiences I’ve had in growing up and working in Ōtautahi from a Māori lens and what I have done to navigate that space. Ngā mihi nui.”

Mahdis Azarmandi:

Mahdis is a Lecturer in the University of Canterbury School of Educational Studies and Leadership. Her research focus is on racism and anti-racism and how racism is produced in progressive social movements & spaces. Her doctoral thesis looked at anti-racism and colonial amnesia in Aotearoa New Zealand and Spain Mahdis has taught in the United States, Germany and Denmark and has been involved in social justice organizing in Aotearoa New Zealand, Spain and Germany. Her research interests are racism and anti-racism, feminism, intersectionality & decolonization. Her most recent work has focused on the politics of memory, commemoration and colonial amnesia

What began this event?

Racism has always been a prevalent issue in Ōtautahi and Aotearoa as a colonised country. For this campaign we are focusing on Ōtautahi and its history to inform this city and spread to a wider Aotearoa. The last straw for us as The Conscious Club was when our friend was racially attacked in Christchurch CBD after a skateboarding event, 5 males attacked him while calling him racial slurs. This attack was during a huge civil rights movement movement and after the terrorist attacks in Christchurch. We were left scared and hurt for our friend and asking ourselves how are people still so blind to racism? We shared our story online hoping to unite and engage with Aotearoa and we were shown a lot of support from our community and people shared stories of similar incidents happening to them in Ōtautahi. From there we decided to direct a campaign focused around the issue that is still so alive in Christchurch.
