The Curious Society presents: "How We Love: Attachment, Emotion, and the Psychology of Intimacy"
Description
Why do some people have difficulty expressing their emotions to close others? And how do different ways of controlling our emotions impact our relationships and well-being?
Drawing on the science of close relationships, Dr Rachel Low will unpack how some of our early experiences shape the way we communicate, regulate emotions, and deal with conflict within intimate relationships.
From why some people withdraw during arguments to how stress and insecurity spill over into our relationships, this lecture will explore the hidden emotional patterns that shape modern love, intimacy, and connection.
Dr Rachel Low is a senior lecturer and researcher at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington whose work focuses on emotion regulation within couple and family relationships. Her research has explored how couples navigate challenges in everyday life, how hiding emotions from close others can shape goal pursuit and well-being, and how interparental conflict and spills over to affect parenting.
Whether you're single, dating, in a long-term relationship, or simply curious about how we operate in close relationships, this session will leave you seeing relationships, and yourself, in a whole new way.

FAQs
- What is The Curious Society?
TCS is a relaxed, monthly lecture series where experts, creatives, and thinkers share fascinating ideas in informal spaces like bars and cafes. Think 'TEDx Talk' meets after-work drinks -- short talks, good conversations, curious people.
- Where does TCS hold events?
TCS partners up with amazing local Wellington bars & cafes to make learning social, accessible, and fun, while building a creative community of curious minds. The venue for each month changes so make sure you check specific month's details!
- Is the ticket refundable?
Unless an event is cancelled or rescheduled, TCS tickets are non-refundable. You are welcome to get in touch with us if you wish to transfer your tickets over to another person.
- Are foods and drinks included in the ticket?
Tickets do not include food or drinks. Our venue partners make each monthly event happen so we encourage attendees to grab some refreshments or snacks to support our local bars & cafes.
- How old do I have to be to attend?
Most events are not age restricted but we will be sure to let you know if they are. You will need to be over 18 years old if you wish to purchase alcoholic drinks at the venues. Some bars will require under 18 year old attendees to be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
- Do I have to purchase an alcoholic drink?
Absolutely not! Our venue partners make each monthly event happen so we do encourage attendees to grab some refreshments or snacks to support our local bars and cafes -- but this does not need to be alcoholic!
