TDC June 2025 Design Yak: a breakfast for creatives to connect, communicate and collaborate.

What we’re seeing, what we’re hearing, what we’re thinking.

June each year I move my (usual Melbourne monthly) designerly breakfast to the sunny shores of Brisbane for The Design Conference. It’s an informal breakfast to meet other creatives and talk broadly about the business of design.

Two heads are better than one, 20 heads are better than two. We’ll share what we’re seeing, hearing and thinking and we’re keen to hear what you’re seeing, hearing and thinking too. 

I’m Carol, the organiser. I started this event in Feb 2017 during the brief stint I had working solo after running a mid-sized studio. I missed walking the talk with other creatives and emailed a few about meeting for breakfast. 

I’m now a design practitioner rather than a practising designer but that’s OK because our cohort includes writers, strategists, photographers, content creators and podcast producers.

Are we a self-help group? Maybe. We’re certainly a brainstrust: each month one of us does a short presentation sharing their specialist knowledge. 
Are we open and transparent? Absolutely.
No agendas, no egos.

We meet at Mary Mae’s – a restaurant/cafe at the Powerhouse in Brisbane - the same venue as TDC. The cost covers a buffet breakfast.

We love newbies joining us. Just jump in and grab a ticket but don’t procrastinate … because of our venue, numbers are limited to 20 and that’s OK because 20 is nice number of people around the table. Ticket sales close 9am the Monday before breakfast.
