Description

LEARN ABOUT TE TIRITI. CARE FOR OUR MOANA.

About the event

Te Kohuroa Rewilding, Tangata Tiriti-Treaty People, and Auckland Council invite the community to join us on the 10th of October for a workshop exploring Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), why it matters to us today, and how it influences our work at Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay and within the marine environment.

As the community works to restore the health and mauri (life force) of Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay, this workshop will support our volunteers to better understand the history, relationships and responsibilities that guide this work. We will explore how Te Tiriti influences our restoration plans for the moana (ocean) and the way we work collectively with mana whenua, iwi, organisations and the local community.

Together, we will explore what genuine Treaty partnerships look like in practice, why the knowledge and guidance of mana whenua is important to the future of Te Kohuroa Rewilding, and how we can build a shared vision for restoring and caring for our blue backyard.

The workshop will cover:

  • The history of Te Tiriti (the Treaty) and what was agreed to by the signatories

  • A reflection on how colonisation has influenced the Aotearoa we know today

  • Matike Mai: A future vision for Aotearoa, empowering mana whenua with support from communities

  • Exploring how Te Tiriti and mana whenua relationships strengthen the community's restoration goals at Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay

Suitable for beginners and anyone who would like a refresher.

The workshop will be facilitated by Tangata Tiriti - Treaty People.
