Event description

Join NAWIC Wellington members for this exclusive members only tour of one of Wellington's most exciting & complex projects, hosted by LT McGuinness.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Te Matapihi, Wellington’s central library, is undergoing a full re-strengthening and refurbishment after closing in 2019 due to seismic risk. The project involves construction of 49 new piles and foundations, formation of new concrete ground beams and slabs, installation of base isolators and steel braced frames to the existing structure, extensions to levels 2—4 and plantrooms, new facades and a full refurbishment of the interior.

The strengthening works require major temporary works, including the temporary support of 90 columns (and subsequent separation from their existing foundations), hanging of superstructure to speed up programme, all while maintaining global stability. The extensive temporary works will be discussed in some detail.

The construction team has created an 800mm seismic gap, called a rattle zone, around the building. In the event of an earthquake this allows the building – separated from the ground on its base isolators – to move without hitting anything.

Construction is planned for completion by the end of August, followed by the fit-out phase, ahead of the public opening in early 2026.

When complete, the redesign will speak to its te taiao (the natural environment) theme, Wellington’s unique history, and will incorporate the joy, boldness and humour of the original post-modern building and its interior. The interior design will mimic a forest, starting at the ground level and rising to the canopy, offering changing perspectives and expansive views. The target is for the building to be New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) 5-star rated. The project is one of multiple Te Ngākau Civic Square projects.

Hear from various speakers including representatives from LT McGuinness,
Athfield Architects, Aurecon & Dunning Thornton will be available on the day to answer any questions
