Te Pātaka / The Art of Tangihanga Reclaiming our Traditional Practices
Event description
Reclaiming our traditional practices
This months Te Pātaka kaupapa looks to grow our understanding of tangihanga With practical insights, lived experiences, and tikanga to support whānau and in the reclamation of our traditional practices hosted by our own Kelly Henare.
Our first speaker, Missy Hemana (Ruapōtaka Marae), shares her experience of weaving waka ma moe, the vessel that returns our loved ones to their tūpuna. Her kōrero focuses on the role of mahi raranga in tangihanga, the importance of connection.
Hera Pierce is the Pou Atawhai at Mercy Hospice Te Korowai Atawhai, our second kaikorero. Hera is a storyteller and cultural advocate who's passion lays in the pakiwaitara/mythical stories, along with the many Punaa that store and hold the Matauranga of our Tupuna, Tipuna, and Mokopuna. Held and told by Wahine Māori. We as Mana Wahine, and Tangata Whenua hold the power of contentment and social order within whanau, hapu. Whare Tangata, womb, house of humanity. The reproductive body of Māori Wahine lay within the depth and sheer beauty of Te Reo Māori, beyond the tuakiri.
This is for anyone involved in tangihanga, whānau, kaimahi, haukāinga, or health professionals.
