Strong leadership today. Thriving whenua tomorrow.Strong leadership today. Thriving whenua tomorrow.

Join us for our next Te Pātaka online session, where we’ll explore the knowledge, responsibilities and practical considerations involved in caring for our whenua and strengthening the future of our marae.

This session brings together kōrero and practical insights around Māori reservations, whenua governance, marae financial responsibilities, koha, charitable status, tax obligations and employment responsibilities.

Our aim is to build confidence, strengthen understanding and support those entrusted with the care and administration of our whenua and marae.

Who is this for:

A space for marae whānau, trustees, reservation trustees, committee members, kaimahi, administrators and anyone involved in the governance, management and financial responsibilities of their marae or Māori reservation.

Whether you’re a trustee, part of a marae committee, involved in administration or simply wanting to better understand your responsibilities, this session is an opportunity to learn, ask questions and share whakaaro.

What to Expect:

  • Understanding Māori Reservations & Governance — an introduction to Part 17 of Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993, Māori reservations and the framework that supports their establishment and administration.

  • Reservation Charters & Responsibilities — exploring the purpose of a reservation charter, what should be included and the importance of having clear guidance to support the governance and administration of our reservations.

  • Managing & Administering Our Whenua — understanding the responsibilities of reservation trustees and the processes available when questions or concerns arise around the administration of a reservation.

  • Koha, Payments & Tax Responsibilities — unpacking how koha and other payments may be treated for tax purposes, and what marae need to understand.

  • Marae Charitable Status & Financial Obligations — exploring charitable status, tax obligations and key considerations for marae organisations.

  • GST, PAYE & Employment Responsibilities — understanding the basics of GST, PAYE and the differences between employees and contractors, including practical compliance considerations.

  • Practical Insights & Pātai — hear from our speakers, ask questions and bring forward the real challenges and experiences faced by your marae.

Bring your kōrero.
Bring your whakaaro.
Bring your burning questions.

Let’s strengthen our knowledge, protect our whenua and support the future of our marae and mokopuna.

Nau mai, haere mai!
