Description

A half-day wānaka (workshop) that offers migrants and newcomers to the Whakatipu region an opportunity to connect with the stories, people, and culture of this whenua (land).

A waharoa is the gateway into a pā or village, and newcomers are always formally welcomed when passing under it and entering for the first time. As the name suggests, this session is a welcoming for newcomers to the Whakatipu region.

Through kōrero (conversation) on local Kāi Tahu history, introductory te reo Māori, waiata (songs), and whakawhanaukataka (the process of connecting), participants will gain a deeper understanding of the place they now call home and the living culture that continues to shape it.

Delivered by local Kāi Tahu tākata (people), in partnership with Te Atamira and QLDC's Welcoming Communities Programme, this kaupapa (programme) provides a culturally grounded welcome to Whakatipu

Te Waharoa ki Whakatipu creates an authentic pathway for newcomers to connect with the history, culture, and people of this place, fostering understanding, belonging, and meaningful relationships across our community.

Free to attend, registration is essential, as spaces are limited.
