Event description

Te Whare Pohewa Kākahu classes.

Our vision for these classes is to immerse you, as a cherished student of the whare pora, in a rich tapestry of knowledge encompassing the following:

1. Whatu: the traditional Māori finger stitch, a delicate art form that weaves stories into fabric.

2. The exquisite craft of creating your own kākahu, where you will embark on a journey to fashion a Korowai— a woven kākahu adorned with hukahuka and bordered by feathers.

3. Tāniko techniques: master the intricate art of Tāniko to embellish the lower border of your kākahu with elegance and grace.

4. An exploration of the terminology that breathes life into the diverse aesthetics and designs of kākahu, enriching your understanding of this cultural heritage.

5. A deep appreciation for the importance of passing down this treasured knowledge, ensuring that the legacy of our craft endures for the future generations of your whānau.

  • Terms and Conditions:
  • Please not by booking and paying for this 6week workshop you’re hereby agreeing to all terms and conditions listed below.

  • We believe it is essential to keep our Korowai Classes small, allowing all Tauira to learn collaboratively as one cohesive group.Over the course of six weeks, with one lesson each week, you will acquire the techniques necessary to create a Korowai suitable for a baby. Why focus on a pepi Korowai rather than an adult-sized one? This approach provides you with ample time to master the skills required for crafting a larger Korowai or kākahu, as full-sized kākahu can take up to three months to complete.By registering for our wānanga, you acknowledge that this is a six-week program consisting of six lessons (one lesson per week).

  • **Homework:** At the conclusion of each lesson, you will receive homework (Whatu/taniko) that must be completed before your next session. This will ensure that by the end of the six weeks, your Korowai is fully completed.

If you find that your Korowai is not finished by the final lesson, you will need to complete it on your own time.

All necessary materials are included in the registration fee.

The fee for the wānanga is $700 per person, and full payment must be received prior to the start of the first lesson. (Payment plans are available.)

**Please note that the full fee is non-refundable.

All wānanga are child-free spaces. To foster an optimal learning environment, we strive to minimize distractions and respectfully accommodate the learning needs of all participants.

Each wānanga/lesson will last between three to four hours, with the first lesson being particularly important as it establishes our kākahu pattern and initiates our Aho Tapu.

Punctuality is crucial for all wānanga. If you anticipate being late, please inform us as soon as possible. We understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise.
