Event description

For those who want to try something a little more challenging than wool and plainweave – this is a 6 hour workshop with all materials and supplies included, to make your own soft cotton cloth that you can take home with you.
This workshop does include warping your own loom, using doubled threads, so it is recommended that you are already somewhat comfortable with warping and weaving plainweave/tabby. However, if you are an adventurous beginner you are welcome to join us, just be aware that you may not have time to weave the whole length (you will still have useable fabric, just shorter).
Depending on your preferences and finished length your weaving could be used for a hand-towel, tea-towel, bread cloth or sewn into a bag, cushion, purse and so on. Select your feature colour on the day from the range of Ashford Caterpillar cotton, and we will have co-ordinating colours of plain cotton to go with it.

Skills covered will include:

  • Warping a rigid heddle loom
  • Using multiple threads in the warp
  • Weaving English Plainweave
  • Weaving with cotton and tips for dealing with non-elastic yarns
  • Posture & tips for avoiding strain
  • Warp-dominant weaving
