Teaching and learning with Lala’s Garden

Join Pakana (Tasmanian Aboriginal) women Theresa Sainty and Janice Ross in acknowledging Country in Lala’s Garden at The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel. Theresa will share the story of Lala, the creator of waterways. Janice will talk about the plants and her artworks.

In this garden of Tasmanian native plants and artworks, Pakana artist Janice Ross brings an understanding of Pakana connections to Country, culture, and community, focusing on plants, birds and insects of the Hobart Rivulet which once flowed underfoot and opened into the Timtumili Minanya / River Derwent at this site. Sculptures by Evie Silver highlight native animals, and echo elements of Janice Ross’s artworks. Words by Theresa Sainty explain the significance of ants.

Theresa Sainty

Theresa is a Pakana woman of the Truwulway and Litaramirimina people of the east/northeast of Lutruwita. She is a researcher, writer and poet. She is a highly skilled and experienced consultant with a background in Government (state and Australian), the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre (Aboriginal Linguistic Consultant), program evaluation, curriculum development, Aboriginal Cultural Awareness development and delivery and public speaking. She is a Senior Indigenous Scholar with the University of Tasmania. 

Janice Ross

Born in Nipaluna (Hobart), Janice Ross is a Pakana artist. Her family Maynard and Lowery are people of the Bass Strait islands, Flinders and Cape Barren Island, direct descendants to sealers and Ancestor Mannalargenna, Chief Warrior of the Truwulway people of the Northeast Coast.
