Teaching on the Run (TOTR) Program – Two Day Course

The Foundation Workshops are open to those involved in delivering medical education within healthcare. About the Program Teaching on the Run (TOTR) Program is from the highly acclaimed TELL Centre's suite of professional development programs. Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) is proud to run six of the Foundation Workshops as part of their education and training portfolio. The Foundation Workshops provide participants with practical skills, knowledge and confidence to fulfill their roles as a clinical teacher, supervisor or assessor. Day One - 3rd September 2021 Planning Learning This workshop focuses on planning effective placements and participants will: • Define and identify the purpose of learning outcomes. • Recognise the importance of teaching and learning preferences. • Develop a Learning Plan. • Discuss elements of the Learning Plan. • Explore challenges with implementation. • Identify benefits of lesson planning. • Recognise the importance of getting to know the learner. Effective Group Teaching This workshop will explore large group teaching and participants will: • Identify considerations and challenges when group teaching. • Recognise effective group teaching methods. • Explore a framework for group teaching. • Identify strategies to evaluate teaching. • Identify benefits and challenges of small and large group teaching. • Explore active learning strategies. • Practice presenting and evaluating teaching. Supporting Learners This workshop addresses learner issues and participants will: • Analyse clinical placement scenarios. • Recognise learner, supervision and system problems. • Identify flags for immediate action. • Apply a framework for supporting learners. • Identify and discuss learner-related problems. • Implement the PAAR framework with learners. • Explore management and prevention of problems. • Increase confidence to deal with difficult situations. Day Two 4th - September 2021 Assessment Fundamentals This workshop focuses on the basics of assessment and participants will: • Identify elements of effective feedback. • Recognise when to give feedback. • Critique the feedback process. • Define different types of assessment. • Discuss formative feedback experiences. • Identify key principles of assessment. • Build confidence with formative and summative assessment. Skills Teaching This workshop focuses on the 4-step approach and participants will: • Define the cognitive elements of a skill. • Identify the features of a skill. • Examine the four-step approach. • Explore the positive critique for giving feedback. • Practice the four-step approach and giving feedback. • Discuss applying the four-step approach in the workplace. • Discuss competence and performance. Clinical Teaching This workshop provides a framework for teaching and participants will: • Identify the benefits of teaching. • Explore adult learning principles and areas of learning. • Define SNAPPS for clinical reasoning. • Explore the positive critique method. • Practice clinical teaching and giving feedback. • Utilise the teaching framework: Set, Dialogue and Closure. • Increase confidence in teaching ability. Format Participants attending the two day workshop are required to complete online learning modules before attending the face to face workshops. Certification A certificate of completion will be provided to participants issued by the TELL Centre once all face to face and online learning components have been completed. Late Registrations Late registrations are permissible, however, registrations made after 1500 hours the day prior to the course start date will not be processed in time. Please be aware that course links and relevant materials will be sent on the morning of the course date by 0900.
