📅 Workshop Schedule
Session 1: Foundations of Writing Instruction
Time: 8:30 AM – 10:30 AM
🎯 Objective: Build foundational knowledge of the theories and practices that underpin high-impact writing instruction.
📚 What You’ll Learn:
Understand the Not so Simple View of Writing, Writing Rope and Four Pillars of Learning
Learn the importance of oral language, storytelling, and how to support cognitive load in writing
Gain tools for handwriting screening, effective instruction and how to build automaticity
Build the foundations of effective sentence level instruction
Session 2: High-Impact Writing Units Using SRSD
Time: 10:50 AM – 12:50 PM
🎯 Objective: Learn how to design and deliver high-quality writing units using the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) approach.
📚 What You’ll Learn:
Develop a working knowledge of SRSD and its research base
Learn how to teach sentence and genre level skills linked with reading units
Use rubrics, checklists and exemplars to support students in planning, writing, and revising
Connect SRSD to rich texts and cross-curricular, knowledge rich content areas (eg HASS)
Session 3: Planning and Applying the Learning
Time: 1:20 PM – 3:20 PM
🎯 Objective: Translate the day’s learning into a draft 4-week writing unit for persuasive, narrative or informative texts.
📚 What You’ll Learn:
Plan and structure a high-impact writing unit using SRSD scaffolds and an editable planner
Build confidence in sentence level writing and how this is linked to the genre units
Explore how to adopt writing instruction across curriculum areas (e.g., Science, HASS)
Useful starting points for supporting whole-school implementation

Julie Scali
Literacy Consultant | Author | Founder of Literacy Impact
Julie is an experienced teacher, school leader, and literacy consultant, and the author of High Impact Reading Instruction and Intervention in the Primary Years. She supports multiple schools across Australia and 25 Top End schools in the Northern Territory to embed evidence-based literacy practices, with a particular focus on whole-school improvement. With over 25 years of experience across Perth, London, and Belfast, Julie is known for translating research into practical, high-impact approaches for the classroom. Julie works with urgency and unwavering care, always keeping students at the heart of her mission to ensure every child receives the high-quality literacy instruction they deserve. Jacinta is an experienced teacher, instructional coach, and literacy consultant with over 25 years of experience in schools across Melbourne and London. She has led schoolwide improvement in literacy through a strong foundation in data-informed practice and high-impact teaching strategies, and is now recognised for her leadership in promoting the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) framework.
Jacinta’s work focuses on translating research into practical, evidence-based routines that build teacher capability and drive student growth—particularly for those at risk. Her support enables schools to implement consistent, structured instruction across all key literacy domains.
Jacinta holds a Master of Learning Intervention and is a registered consultant with Learning Difficulties Australia (LDA). She is known for her thoughtful, collaborative approach and her commitment to ensuring that every child receives the high-quality, structured instruction they need to succeed.
