Event description

Tech in Colour: Experiences of people of colour in the tech industry

Join us for Careers in Colour’s event, ‘Tech in Colour: Experiences of people of colour in the industry’. As part of the event, we’ll feature a diverse group of people who will speak to their experiences as people of colour working in the tech industry.

This is an in-person event held on Wednesday 29 March, 6:30pm - 8:30pm (AEST) at the Canva space in Sydney on 64 Kippax Street, Surry Hills. Nibbles and drinks will be provided.

There is a need for more open conversations about what the state of racial, cultural, and ethnic diversity is in the growing Australian tech industry, how to navigate challenges as people of colour in tech and what needs to be done to address these issues.

What the event will be covering

  • Experiences of the panellists, including their inspiration, barriers and challenges faced as people of colour in the tech industry
  • The value and importance of career role models, sponsors, mentors and allies in tech
  • How the tech sector can move beyond siloing identities (i.e. race, gender), to taking an anti-oppressive and intersectional approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Advice for career professionals, particularly people of colour, starting or thinking about entering into the tech industry

Everyone is welcome

While this event will speak particularly to the experiences of people of colour in the tech industry, we welcome any allies who are interested in learning more.

Moderated by David Ky (he/him), Chief of Staff (People & Culture) at Airwallex, we will be joined by some fantastic panellists on the night, and we will be releasing more information about them on our socials.

  • Stephanie Zuniga-Maher (she/her), Diversity and Inclusion Talent Partner at Canva
  • Vivek Katial (he/him), Data at Multitudes & Executive Director at Good Data Institute
  • Erika Ly (she/her), Policy Manager at Tech Council of Australia
  • Joanna Ng (she/her), Investment Manager at Investible

    About Careers in Colour

Careers in Colour aims to support and empower people of colour to thrive in their careers, providing a community for open discussion and visible and diverse role models.

Our philosophy is rooted in transformative equity and particularly focuses on underrepresented and marginalised communities with intersecting identities. We aim to do this by providing opportunities for leadership, community and connectivity, while mobilising advocates around issues that affect people of colour in the workplace and push for structural change.

CiC is running a series of industry events (panel events) to spotlight the state of cultural diversity in different sectors in professional Australia and discuss what’s needed to support people of colour in their careers.

We acknowledge that we live and work on stolen land, and also wish to acknowledge that many of us are beneficiaries of ongoing and historical colonial violence. Sovereignty was never ceded.

Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
