Event description

Attend online or in person. (Tasmania: 4.30pm start)

We are excited to welcome Dr Scott Hollier from the Centre for Accessibility Australia. His ethos is centred around:

Technology + accessibility = independence.

If we work towards that, then so much becomes possible.

Some of the topics covered by this session include:

  • The evolution of the screen reader and discussion about popular built-in features in Windows, Mac, iPhone/iPad, Android and Chromebook devices.
  • How user expectations are changing and explore what could be next for mainstream devices.
  • Benefits and issues with immersive environments such as Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).

Dr Hollier will also share details about his own personal journey with Retinitis Pigmentosa. He says: "One of the things I was often told when I was losing my sight is that you should try not to be scared. I think this is the wrong approach – it’s okay in my view to be scared, the key is to be scared, but try to do the scary thing anyway. This may take time and sometimes failure will happen but if we strive to overcome the everyday challenges, the big exciting things will follow."

This event aims to connect people living with vision impairment and is a great opportunity for socialising, sharing experiences and asking questions.

Tickets are free, but registration is essential.

In 2016, Scott published his own outstanding autobiography: Outrunning the Night: A life journey of disability, determination and joy Download a copy of Scott's autobiography
