    Undercover Artist Tell It! Workshop

    Have you ever been talking to a friend about your life and been told, “Wow! You should write about that!” Yes? Well, this workshop is for you!

    Facilitated by Steve Pirie, and delivered accessibly and open to all, this Tell It! workshop will equip you with the tools and skills to confidently turn your life into art. Whether you want to keep it as real as possible, or perhaps you want to create a fictional world for your alter ego to live in – no matter how you want to tell your story, we want to support you in starting to tell it!

    • What’s the difference between ‘inspired by’ and ‘based on’ your life
    • Emotional safety when creating personal work
    • Creating fiction from fact to create a new story

    Whether you are just starting your performing arts career or looking for new development opportunities, this workshops aims to provide accessible and safe learning spaces for industry professionals.

    • Facilitator will describe any visuals on videos and on handouts. Please let us know if you would like additional audio description.

    The venue is wheelchair accessible with level drop off/pick up and one disabled car park available. The workshop will be accessed via a long concrete ramp down to the courtyard space, and the workshop will be hosted in the room nearby. An accessible restroom is available. The workshop space is air-conditioned. You are welcome to get fresh air, stretch, leave the space and return as you need to.

    Steve Pirie Bio
    Steve Pirie is a writer, theatre maker and youth arts worker currently based in Meanjin / Brisbane. A graduate of the University of Southern Queensland, he is also the co-Artistic Director of Mixtape Theatre Collective, an independent company based in Toowoomba, Queensland. His first play, Escape From the Breakup Forest, has since been published by Playlab following state wide seasons, and in 2014, Steve’s work 3 OClock, Flagpole was selected for development as part of the Lab Rats initiative. In 2017, he was an independent artist with Queensland Theatre where he developed his work, Return to the Dirt as part of his residency, which was presented at La Boite’s HWY Festival in 2018. Steve has been a participant in Playlab’s Alpha Processing program and was a 2019 Artist in Residence with La Boite Theatre Company.

    In 2020, Steve was shortlisted for the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award for his works Motive (co-written with Emily Burton), City Hearts Loves You and Return to the Dirt. Steve is the 2020-21 winner of the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award. Steve was also Associate Artist with Queensland Theatre from 2021 – 2024.

    Steve’s production credits include various creative positions with The Good Room, the Australian Theatre for Young People, Imaginary Theatre Co, Brisbane Powerhouse, Artsworx, Queensland Theatre, La Boite Theatre Company, The Young Company in Cairns, Vena Cava Productions and the Festival of Australian Student Theatre.
