Tender Documentary screening and Community Discussion
Event description
Join the Golden Bay Death Collective for a screening of Tender, an award-winning Australian documentary about one community reclaiming how they care for their dead. Set against the backdrop of the industrial seaside town of Port Kembla, Tender is at once heartbreakingly beautiful and surprisingly funny — showing how death care can be personal, affordable, and full of heart.
After the film, we’ll host an open community conversation exploring what end-of-life and after-death care could look like in Golden Bay, and how we can work together to support each other through dying and grieving.

Full Synopsis:
Set against the stunning backdrop of the industrial seaside town of Port Kembla, a feisty and resilient community group have determined to take back the responsibility that most of us leave to someone else – to care for their own dead.
Scattered throughout are stories that cut to the core, revealing why this small band have decided to take on a practice that for most is taboo.
As their plans for community-based funerals gather momentum, one of their own is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Tender is at once a heartbreakingly beautiful and beautifully funny glimpse of an extraordinary community taking on one of the most essential challenges of human life… its end.

Main Question:
What could community death care look like for our town?
Why This Matters:
In Tender, a small Australian community works alongside funeral professionals, neighbours, and friends to create more personal and connected farewells. Their story shows that death care can be collaborative, creative, and deeply human.
