Open Day 2025
Event description
To celebrate our first year of operations, Tender Funerals Canberra Region invites you to book your place on a tour at our Open Day and see what happens behind the scenes.
Come and explore what not-for-profit, community-led funeral care looks like and chat to staff and volunteers as they take you through our beautiful Fairbairn home.
At Tender Funerals Canberra Region, our vision is that every Australian has access to meaningful and affordable funerals. 'Meaningful and affordable' is different for every person, so this is your opportunity to explore what that might mean for you. Whether you are actively looking for funeral care options or simply curious, you are welcome to come and talk to us about what we do.
The tour will include the option to see;
Arrangement rooms
Where will you be when you come to discuss your choices for a funeral? And what sorts of things can you ask for?Gathering rooms
Did you know that even if you choose to have a cremation with no service, with Tender there are still ways to spend time with your person?Wash and Dress Rooms
Until about 100 years ago, almost everyone was washed and dressed by their family. Today, this option is still available at Tender, which families can do on their own or with our assistance. Come and see what's involved and how you can pick and choose what (if anything) you may like to do.Mortuary
Our lovely, light-filled mortuary is a place of care. We'll take you through what basic mortuary care might look like, show you the equipment we use and you'll have lots of opportunities for questions.Coffin Workshop
Our coffin workshop has examples of cardboard, wicker and traditional coffins as well as our community linen store. You can also see how we make our custom nameplates.Vehicles
See the difference between our transfer van and funeral van and learn about doing your own funeral transport.
You'll also see examples of a Shroud & Tray, how our Cool Plate can be set up for home death-care and a Coffin Decorating station.
If you're a bit nervous about visiting a funeral home, please be assured that one of our most common pieces of feedback is how friendly and welcoming the spaces are. We will make sure you know what's behind each door and you have the option to step out at any time. You will not see anything that impacts the privacy of the people we're caring for or their families. This is a community space, performing a community service, and everyone is welcome.
Accessibility
Tender is a family-friendly space, so if you have children who are interested, they are most welcome. We also have comfortable seats in every room and accessible parking, so if standing or walking for any distance is a challenge, there are ways to enjoy the tour. If you have vision, hearing or other sensory needs, please contact us on canberra@tenderfunerals.com.au or on 6171 6229 to discuss the options available.
