TEXTILE WORKSHOPS

Enjoy creating unique coiled basketry and/or Indigo dyed Shibori cloth at peaceful Coila Rural Retreat. Both techniques can be beautifully integrated to explore colour, pattern and form - indigo dyed/shibori materials produced during Saturday's workshop can be used to feature within the coiled basketry pieces created in the workshop on Sunday.

These workshops are non-residential on the same weekend. One workshop will be running each day from 9.30am - 3pm and participants may choose to attend both workshops (2 days) or one workshop (1 day).

Cost: $160 per workshop.
There is a discounted ticket package for the 2 day option - $270 total for both workshops.

Workshop Day 1 (Saturday 8th March) Indigo Dyeing & Shibori 9.30am - 3pm

Shibori is the art of folding, pleating, binding, stitching & clamping fabric to create a resist when dyeing.

This workshop is led by textile artist, Alison Bogg.

Learn how to use a variety of Japanese style Shibori techniques & an indigo dye vat.

Discover ways to experiment with Shibori techniques and processes involved in indigo dyeing.

Create a uniquely dyed silk scarf and/or clothing/other item, small samples and some extra materials*.

*We will also use the techniques to create unique materials that can be used in coiling work on Sunday.

For Workshop Day 1: Materials are supplied - please bring a small 100% natural fibre clothing or other item (must be natural such as cotton, linen, hemp, nothing too thick) if you like to create an extra item.

Workshop Day 2 (Sunday 9th March) Coiled Basketry 9.30am - 3pm

Expand your creative practice with the traditional craft of coiled basketry using beautiful hand dyed raffia, recycled threads and fabric.

This workshop is led by textile artist Trish Flynn.

Learn the fundamental techniques of coiling, how to start your project, shape and add materials to make a small vessel, mat or wall art with both covered and uncovered cores.

Choose your own colour scheme and design to create a unique and original piece using both spiral and blanket stitches.

Participants from the indigo workshop may incorporate samples of your indigo fabric, or you can upcycle fabrics from your own stash to personalise your project.

Coiling is an incredibly versatile practice as well being both sustainable and meditative.

For Workshop Day 2: Multi coloured raffia will be supplied - you may bring small light weight fabric scraps to incorporate. (minimum 30cm x 2cm strips). Some fabric will be provided.

For those who can only come for a day -

Yes, you can attend just one workshop on either day. Just choose one of the techniques. Each workshop is only run on one specific day over the weekend.

Sunday: Coiled Basketry

No experience necessary.

The workshops weekend provides materials as stated (see descriptions above)) & refreshments/morning tea. Please bring your lunch (microwave and fridge available)

Alison Bogg - Alison’s professional background encompasses set/costume design, costume technology, textile arts, puppetry, & arts education; which influences her work, with a focus on experimenting with textile surface design, indigo dyeing & shibori. She exhibits her work in regional NSW and the ACT and regularly runs workshops in the region, interstate and at her textile studio in Bingie.

Alison is a member of the Eurobodalla Fibre & Textile Artists Group (EFTAG), Narooma School of Arts & Craft Australia.

Trish Flynn - Trish has been using traditional basketry and weaving techniques to create contemporary baskets, vessels and sculptural pieces for over 15 years and has exhibited extensively. The techniques featured in Trish’s pieces include twining, looping, and coiling using a range of natural fibres such as linen, hemp, flax and paper twine, raffia, and vines. Trish also includes recycled materials including copper wire and fabrics.

Trish is a member of the Eurobodalla Fibre & Textile Artists Group (EFTAG), and was a finalist in the 2024 River of Art prize.
