4-Week Studio Course | Intermediate to Advanced

Photo Transfers & Mixed Media Narrative

Integrating Image, Memory & Layered Storytelling

Wed: 11th / 18th / 25th November & 2nd December (10am-1pm)

Ready to deepen your mixed media practice over time?

This four-week version of Textured Landscapes V is designed for artists already familiar with my layered mixed media approach who want the space to thoughtfully integrate photography, memory, and narrative into their work.

Working across four structured studio sessions, we move beyond simply transferring photographs and into the considered process of embedding image within constructed surface.

Using aluminium and canvas as your foundation, you will transfer photographic imagery and progressively build composition, structure, and layered mixed media techniques to create a resolved artwork that carries depth and meaning.

This is about integrating image - not simply applying it.

Session 1 - Image Preparation & Transfer

We begin by preparing and transferring your chosen photographic images onto aluminium and canvas using Powerprint.
You’ll explore placement and initial compositional decisions, setting a strong foundation for integration.

Session 2 - Layering & Compositional Structure

With the image established, we begin constructing the surface.
You’ll explore compositional balance, structural layering, and the first stages of integrating texture around the image.

Session 3 - Texture, Tone & Integration

This session focuses on building tonal depth and textural cohesion using Powertex and Bister patinas.

We work toward embedding the image into the surface so it feels unified rather than applied.

Session 4 - Refinement, Balance & Resolution

The final session is dedicated to refinement - adjusting balance, strengthening depth, and resolving the artwork with intention and clarity.

Working across four weeks allows you to step back between sessions, assess your progress, and return with fresh perspective - strengthening both your confidence and your creative decision-making.

By the end of the course, you will move beyond simply “adding a photograph” and understand how to construct depth from the surface up - integrating image, texture, and material with intention and confidence.

You will leave feeling empowered to use your own photographs as part of a layered visual language that carries memory, place, and story.

Participants are encouraged to bring meaningful photographic references to make the work personal and authentic.

This workshop is designed for artists already familiar with my layered mixed media approach.

Prior attendance at one of my mixed media workshops is required.

Workshop Fee:

$325 - 4 sessions | 3 hours per session

All materials included.

This extended studio format allows space for deeper exploration, reflection, and refinement across four guided sessions.

Part of the Textured Landscapes Journey

Textured Landscapes is an evolving creative pathway exploring surface, depth, and narrative through mixed media.

Each workshop focuses on a different aspect of constructed landscape — from building textured foundations and painterly interpretation, to ocean-inspired forms, sculptural elements, and image-based storytelling.

Workshops may be taken in any order, allowing you to enter the journey at a point that supports your current practice.

Over time, artists often notice a shift — moving from flat surfaces to greater depth, from tentative layering to confident, bold experimentation. This series is designed to support that evolution.

About Ashley

Ashley Hay is a mixed media artist whose practice explores landscape through texture, surface, and intuitive response to place.

Working across painting, sculpture, and layered assemblage, Ashley is known for building richly textured artworks that blur the boundaries between constructed surface and painterly expression. Recycled materials, experimental processes, and sculptural layering sit at the heart of her work.

From her home studio in Safety Bay, Ashley facilitates small-group workshops designed to support both technical understanding and personal artistic development. As a Master Trainer in Powertex, she brings depth of knowledge alongside a calm, focused teaching style that encourages experimentation and confidence.

Her workshops are grounded in process, material exploration, and thoughtful response to landscape - inviting participants to slow down, build depth, and create work that feels genuinely their own.
